There is no hard and fast rule about writing application letters; there is no easy, simple-to-follow recipe for success. Our experience is that many different types of letters can work; these may vary in length from two paragraphs functioning purely as a cover letter to a longer, stand-alone, selling document.
Generally, an application letter should be short and sharp, and have clarity and impact. However, the type of letter required is determined not only by the type of job for which the applicant is applying, but also by the type of CV/Résumé the applicant is attaching. Whilst it is usual practice to attach a CV/Résumé to the application letter, sometimes a stand-alone letter (with the offer of a CV/Résumé upon request) may have the desired result.
